What is the difference between a UIF number from SARS and a UIF number from the Department of Employment and Labour (DoL)?
The UIF number issued by SARS is linked to your company’s tax registration and is used when submitting UIF declarations through SARS systems like e-Filing with your EMP201. The number issued by SARS is 10 characters long and starts with a U followed by the last 9 digits of your PAYE number. The UIF number from the Department of Employment and Labour (DoL) is a separate registration specific to the UIF fund itself, used for claims and compliance directly with the DoL. The number issued by the DoL can be up to 9 digits long, and sometimes have a forward slash before the last digit. Should you have done UI19s before - the number will be on the UI19 or on correspondence from the UIF department within the DoL. They are two separate registrations with two different government entities, and both are required - one to pay UIF along with PAYE and SDL to SARS, the other to declare for which employees UIF were deducted and paid for to the DoL.
